BROCKWELL
BROCKWELL LIDO READY FOR LIFT OFF
The £3m refurbishment of the Grade II listed Brockwell Lido is ready for the 2007 Summer season and the Lido's 70th birthday.
The investment, financed by Fusion, with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, secures the future of one of the 180 Lidos built in the 1930's of which only a handful survive today.
The original Lido pool designed 70 years ago, has been restored to its former glory and the challenge of making the site sustainable has been met with the addition of a single story extension replicating the original design to provide an extra 10,000 square feet of space. Phase 1 will see the pool reopened with refurbished pool surrounds, new changing areas, entrance and fast track reception added. The second phase, due to be completed in September will provide year round activities in the new health and fitness suite.

HYDROMASSAGE
ASTRAL UK AND ALBA NOTCH UP A DOUBLE
A £10m redevelopment of the Macdonald Berystede Hotel and Spa in Ascot has proved a double success for Astral UK and Alba Pools.
The upgrading of the prestigious Berkshire hotel called for an impressive new health spa with 18m deck level indoor pool, technogym and thermal suite. Alba Pools completed the installation of this elegant suite last year using almost exclusively Astral UK plant and equipment.
When a second pool was required, so pleased were the Macdonald Hotel group with the first that they contracted the Alba/Astral partnership to deliver. The new pool, which has a 6m x 3m outdoor area and a swim-through to an indoor 4m x 3m area, features two of Astral UK's newest products from their Wellbeing range: stainless steel water curtains and their new stainless steel hydromassage loungers.
"The new Hydrotherapy pool has proved very popular with our Vital Spa members and hotel guests alike. The pool really adds to the ambience of the hotel and creates an air of exclusivity that attracts new high end business to the hotel," says Jacqui Bagnall, Regional Managing Director for Macdonalds Hotels south.
The hydromassage lounger is Astral UK's most recent introduction to their range of extras for pleasure and therapeutic pools. The lounger provides a massage through its strategically placed air jets and comes in two styles suitable for concrete pools and liner pools. The lounger can be located in the body of the pool on a tailor made column or built into the walls of the pool. Manufactured in AISI-316 stainless steel, the lounger is resilient to corrosion and designed with ease of maintenance in mind.
"I think we’re the first to install Astral UK’s hydromassage lounger and it’s certainly the best of its type on the market. The hotel was delighted with the indoor pool we did for them and they were impressed by the standard of the Astral UK fittings. The second pool was opened at Easter and has proved a big success with hotel guests during the spectacular Spring weather," says Alba Pools' William Booth.

HOW CAN SWIMMING POOL OPERATORS CUT CARBON FOOTPRINT?
Is there a way to make your swimming pool more eco friendly? The answer is yes says Brian Andrews, Managing Director of the UK's Pool Contractor of the Year, Heritage Pools Ltd.
"Many leisure operators think they need to go the whole way and install a complete eco pool, which is essentially a specially constructed pond and not an appealing option for everyone," commented Andrews "but you can make many green choices in the design of swimming pools that can help reduce the resulting carbon footprint."
Pool heating is the number one area where greener choices can be made. "The majority of pools are heated solely by oil or gas which is a big no if you want to go green. Instead think about supplementing the heating through solar powered heaters or installing alternative heating options such as ground source heat pumps, which is where a 60m hole is bored into the ground to tap into the natural thermal currents that exist at this depth, or consider an air to water heat pump where heat is taken from the surrounding air or a water to water heat pump where heat is taken from surrounding water and converted to heat for the pool. We also always recommend that a client installs insulation into the pool walls and floor to conserve heat and reduce heating bills.
"The majority of swimming pools are heated to around 30†C or more which is considered to be the comfortable temperature," says Andrews, "however to reduce your usage of gas and oil, switch your pool temperature down a degree or two and make sure you use an insulated pool cover to conserve heat when the pool is not in use."
Reducing travel miles can reducing your carbon footprint, so think about where the materials come from. "For example, rather than choosing Brazilian slate, consider Cumbrian slate, the quality and range is just as good, and the travel distance is cut by thousands of miles," commented Andrews. The UK has a wealth of materials available for your pool build, including slates, stones, glass and metal, many of which rival the imported varieties in quality and choice.
